Yellow Wind Sage (黄风大圣) is a Yaoguai King in Black Myth: Wukong.
Description[]
Yellow Wind Sage was one of Sun Wukong's old enemies that was previously defeated. After being spared by Bodhisattva Lingji, Yellow Wind Sage participated in the Celestial Court's attack on Sun Wukong, and was gifted Wukong's ears. With these new powers, Yellow Wind Sage took revenge and decapitated Bodhisattva Lingji before taking his rat guais back to retake Yellow Wind Ridge. His only true resistance would be sons of his old lieutenant, Tiger Vanguard, but both were dealt with easily. The younger brother was knocked out and later fled, while the elder brother surrendered and joined his ranks.
Yellow Wind Sage soon took control of the entire valley as his Samadhi Wind polluted the nearby areas like Sandgate Village and his rat guais and stone guais overran the rest. Having finally returned to power, Yellow Wind Sage would hide behind special gates with requiring two tallies from his best vanguards.
Location[]
From the Yellow Wind Formation's Windseal Gate, go down and turn right towards the sandstorm. Yellow Wind Sage is inside the sandstorm. Alternatively from Crouching Tiger Temple's Cellar Shrine, go down and turn left, and go into the sandstorm.
Upon its defeat, you will complete Chapter 2 and will receive Samadhi Wind Agate, Silk x5, Cold Iron Leaves x2, Refined Iron Sand, Yaoguai Core x2, and Mind Core. You will also receive Fuming Ears relic.
A friendly version of Yellow Wind Sage appears in the Kingdom of Sahali, asking for the Destined One's help in fighting Fuban. As the creature holds the Wind Tamer, Yellow Wind Sage cannot fight it directly and can only beat the drums which Fuban finds intolerable. After Fuban is defeated in the first round and the Destined One seizes Wind Tamer, Yellow Wind Sage will join them in attacking Fuban.
Behaviour[]
In his first phase the Yellow Wind Sage will use his trident to slash, stab and strike the player, unleashing powerful jumping aerial slashes and strikes on occasion to make his attacks more unpredictable. He can imbue his trident with Samadhi Wind to increase his attack power and speed, unleashing arcs and waves of golden wind to attack the player from a distance. He has a grab attack that starts with kicking the player before smashing them to the ground and impaling them with his trident. The Yellow Wind Sage will ultilize the power of his Samadhi Wind more often in the later stages of his fight, using it to create more powerful gale slashes, unleashing a series of wind clones to attack the player with, and creating a large tornado that can move about the battlefield which can send the player flying into the air if they do not avoid it in time. His attacks will become more aggressive and frantic the closer he is to defeat.
If the Player has already acquired the Wind Tamer vessel, they can use it to temporarily disappate the Yellow Wind Sage's Samadhi Wind and momentarily stun him in the later stages of his fight, making his boss battle much easier to deal with.
Background[]
Endless yellow winds, sands stretch afar,
In the land once abundant, no homes there are.
Half-guai, half-immortal, who can decide?
Thief or sage, why would he mind?
Firelight flickered over a table laden with food and drink.
The Second Prince of Flowing Sands, sitting on the table, gnawed on what might have been half a haunch with relish.
The King of Flowing Sands sat beside his son obediently. As someone who typically delighted in pointing out the missteps of others, he remained oddly silent during the feast.
Even the Tiger Vanguard was on his best behavior. Watching the dimwit across from him gorging on the haunch, the tiger seemed to have no appetite.
The Yellow Wind Sage sat in the place of honor, one hand caressing the object resting on the table: the head of a bodhisattva with eyes closed in silence.
"Pa, I need more." The sudden shout from the Second Prince set all hearts hammering. His pa, the King of Flowing Sands, glowered and hissed, "Shut it!" Then he scrambled to his knees and pleaded for forgiveness.
"A trifle, is all." The Yellow Wind Sage rested his hand atop the head of Lingji, then stood. "With my master's most prized vessel in my grasp, I can surely absorb that thing. I mean to enter secluded meditation, starting today. I have appeased those old rascals from above, yet it will be wise to remain discreet."
"If you're seeking seclusion, Master," fawned the King of Flowing Sands, "my people and I would be honored to camp outside the cave and stand guard beside you."
"Beside me?" The Sage gazed at his master's head and rejected his offer immediately. "No, you will move to the ridge. I will be setting the Yellow Wind Formation. Let no one disturb me."
"If...if there is urgent news, Master, how shall we bear it unto you?" The King cried out.
The Yellow Wind pointed at the Tiger Vanguard. "Have your rock brothers raise paths of sand, each with a gate locked by a secret tally. You two vanguards will each hold a tally..."
Before Tiger Vanguard knelt to thank the Sage for this weighty charge, the King interjected anxiously: "But Master! We rats have never got along with those cats. If they hold the..."
The Yellow Wind Sage didn't want to listen at all. He picked up the Buddha head and interrupted, "All of you, withdraw. Do not disturb me until the very sky collapses."
Journey to the West[]
Yellow Wind Sage, occasionally translated as Yellow Wind Demon, was the lord of Yellow Wind Ridge and served as one of the early obstacles to the Tang Monk's journey. Believing he could achieve immortality if he consumed the monk's flesh, Yellow Wind Sage instructed Tiger Vanguard to kidnap the monk. Though Tiger Vanguard was wounded from his encounter with Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie, he was able to complete the task. As Yellow Wind Sage and Tiger Vanguard debated over how best to cook the Tang Monk, both Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie arrived to try and make a rescue.
Tiger Vanguard was quickly killed by the pair, but Yellow Wind Sage is able to defeat both disciples thanks to his Samadhi Wind. Notably, Sun Wukong could not function in their fight as the wind not only blew his clones away, but the high amount of dust that the wind carried also blinded him. The pair would go around to find a way to defeat Yellow Wind Sage before eventually reaching Bodhisattva Lingji, who had previously subdued Yellow Wind Sage but allowed him to live under the condition he not harm others again.
Wukong would return to attack Yellow Wind Sage, but as Yellow Wind Sage was about to use his Samadhi Wind, he is defeated by Bodhisattva Lingji's Golden Loong Staff, which hits Yellow Wind Sage so hard that he reverts back to his true, rodent-like form. With Yellow Wind Sage defeated, Sun Wukong and co are able to resume their journey.
