Journey to the West is a 16th-century Chinese novel and is the source material for the game Black Myth: Wukong. It was written by Wu Cheng'en in 1592.
It is regarded as one of the greatest Classic Chinese Novels.
Introduction[]
Journey to the West (《西游记》), also known as Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (《西游释厄传》), is the first romantic epic novel of gods and demons in ancient China[1]. It is one of China's Four Great Classical Novels and one of the Four Marvelous Works. The book was completed in the mid-16th century during the Ming Dynasty, and the author is generally believed to be Wu Cheng'en (吴承恩) of the Ming Dynasty. The story narrates the journey of Tang Sanzang (唐三藏) and his disciples Sun Wukong (孙悟空), Zhu Bajie (猪八戒), Sha Wujing (沙和尚), and Bai Long Ma (白龙马) traveling to the Western Heaven to obtain Buddhist scriptures. The novel embodies the ancient theme of rewarding good and punishing evil, and some viewpoints suggest that Journey to the West is a satirical novel that critiques the realms of power.
Since its publication, Journey to the West has been widely circulated in China and worldwide, translated into multiple languages[1]. Journey to the West is a household name in China and some Asian regions. Characters like Sun Wukong, Tang Sanzang, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, as well as stories such as "The Havoc in Heaven" (大闹天宫), "The Three Battles with the White-Bone Demon" (三打白骨精), and "Sun Wukong Borrows the Palm-Leaf Fan Three Times" (孙悟空三借芭蕉扇), are incredibly well-known. Over the centuries, Journey to the West has been adapted into various forms of local opera, films, TV series, animations, and more, resulting in numerous versions.
Journey to the West is a story created based on the experiences of the real-life monk Xuanzang (玄奘法师) travelling westward in search of Buddhist teachings. Therefore, the central part of its historical background is set during the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty. The novel integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism's thoughts, legends, and myths, constructing a world where humans, gods, and demons coexist.
Synopsis[]
Journey to the West is a 100-chapter novel that follows the legendary pilgrimage of Tang Sanzang to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures, accompanied by his disciples. The story is divided into four main sections.
- Sun Wukong's Origins (Chapters 1–7) The novel begins with the tale of Sun Wukong, a monkey born from stone, who gains immense powers, defies Heaven, and is ultimately imprisoned by the Buddha for 500 years.
- Tang Sanzang's Journey Begins (Chapters 8–12) The Buddha orders Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) to find a pilgrim to retrieve the scriptures. Tang Sanzang is chosen, revealing his past life as a Buddha’s disciple, and embarks on his mission.
- The Journey and Trials (Chapters 13–99) Tang Sanzang recruits his disciples:
- Sun Wukong, freed from his prison, is the strongest and most rebellious.
- Zhu Bajie, a fallen celestial marshal, is gluttonous and lazy.
- Sha Wujing, a quiet river ogre, is loyal and hardworking.
- Bai Long Ma, a dragon prince, serves as Tang Sanzang’s steed. The majority of the novel details their perilous travels across a fantastical landscape filled with demons, spirits, and trials. - Sun Wukong and Tang Sanzang achieve Buddhahood.
- Sha Wujing becomes an arhat.
- Bai Long Ma is made a nāga.
- Zhu Bajie, due to his flaws, is appointed an altar cleanser.
