The Destined One wearing Wukong’s Armor

The Destined One (天命人 Tiānmìng Rén) is the titular main protagonist of Black Myth: Wukong.

An anthropomorphic monkey from Mount Huaguo, he is one of many young warriors who embark on a journey to revive the legendary Monkey King Sun Wukong by recovering six relics: the Six Senses of the Great Sage (大圣六根 Dàshèng Liùgēn) that Wukong had split into following his defeat centuries ago, which have scattered across the lands of China and India.

Near the end of the game, it is revealed that the Destined One is one of the relics: the Mind of Sun Wukong, and is meant to be his new incarnation of the Monkey

However, if one manages to find and defeat Erlang Shen, the Sacred Divinity. It will be revealed, Erlang Shen, is holder of the true Mind of Wukong. Wukong's mind is bequeathed to the Destined One after defeating Erlang, which unlocks the True Ending of the game. Revealing that Erlang Shen conspired in a secret plot by Sun Wukong to kill himself, so he could be reborn once more, free of the Tightening Headband, regaining his cherished freedom and unbound by the will of Heaven, possibly due to his Seventy-Two Transformations.

Appearance[]

The Destined One is the spitting image of his spiritual predecessor Sun Wukong, fittingly so as his mind and new incarnation. He has light brown fur with 84,000 spiky hairs, pinkish beige skin, dark brownish eyes, a thin tail, black nails, and is of an average sized height and build human.

Personality[]

He is seen as a normal monkey yet to reach his potential. In contrast to Sun Wukong, the Destined One is portrayed as a determined and courageous warrior; driven by a sense of duty to fulfill his destiny and restore Wukong to his former glory. He is a lot humbler and more cautious around his surroundings, acting under the guidance of those that help guide him throughout his journey. He never speaks at any point and only ever makes sounds when in combat.

Like his fellow monkeys, the Destined One looked up to and worshipped Sun Wukong; becoming devastated and distraught at learning of his hero's death. Like his fellow monkeys, he made it his life's goal to bring Wukong back to the world somehow. His bond with his fellow monkeys is shown to be just as strong, determined to help them whenever they are in trouble and becoming furious when their way of life is threatened as he would stand against it and fight for them.

The Destined One does appear to be rather clever and mischievous at some points, much like Wukong himself, as he was able to trick a group of wolves while merely posing as a fruit. These traits of his are what ultimately makes him to be the one destined to be Wukong's successor, as he possesses Wukong's rebellious nature; but with a sense of humility and dignity along with it as well as a strong sense of justice.

Equipment[]

While the Destined One obtained many armors, weapons, and gourds throughout his adventure, he first started off with a Willow Wood Staff, the Tiger Hide Loincloth Armor Set, and an Old Gourd as starting setup for Sun Wukong starting life almost. At the near end of his journey, the Destined One obtained the Supreme Gourd, and retrieved Sun Wukong's Armor Set, and his Ruyi Jingu Bang. If he fought Erlang Shen before facing the final ordeal, he will obtain Erlang's signature Three-Pointed Double-Edged Spear.

Relationships[]

  • Sun Wukong - The Destined One has a close bond with Sun Wukong since he is part of him, being one of the 6 relics that Sun Wukong left behind and later after obtaining all 5 of the 6 relics he becomes his spiritual successor. In the secret ending (true ending) the Destined One becomes the reincarnation of Sun Wukong by obtaining all 6 relics of the Monkey King himself.
  • Zhu Bajie - The Destined One's companion after their little encounter and is almost like a kid of uncle figure.
  • The Fourth Sister - The Destined One's love interest (presumably, but hinted).

Trivia[]

  • Though his name is unrevealed, He is commonly called and referred by many characters in the game as just "monkey".
  • The Destined One is the Mind of Sun Wukong (one of the 6 relics).
  • The 6 firsts relics are a reference to the Buddhist concept of Āyatana, "six sense bases" refer to the six internal sense organs in Buddhism
  • Just like Sun Wukong, he does not wear shoes and rather walks bare-footed.
  • Considering that the Destined One is Sun Wukong's reincarnation, it's likely that he is a stone monkey like him.
  • The Destined One could allude to Sun Luzhen, who is Sun Wukong's spiritual descendant from one of the many unofficial sequels of Journey to the West, Later Journey to the West. Like Wukong, he was born from a stone egg, achieved immortality, and wrought havoc in heaven. However, instead of Tathagata Buddha, the Jade Emperor sought help from Sun Wukong instead, who is now a (Victorious Fighting) Buddha post-pilgrimage. Instead of imprisoning his descendant under a mountain like he was centuries ago, Wukong simply reprimanded Luzhen by taking the Ruyi Jingu Bang from him, placed the golden headband on his head, and instructed him to resort to wisdom and courage instead of brute force, otherwise he'd forever remain a wild immortal. Afterwards, he was tasked to accompany a historical monk named "Dadian" on a same journey to India. The two are also accompanied by Zhu Bajie's son, Zhu Yijie, and the disciple of Sha Wujing, Sha Zhihe.
    • Black Bear Guai referred to the Destined One as "Young Sage" or "Little Sage" which, coincidentally, is also Luzhen's title, a self-proclaimed title dubbed as "Little Sage Equal to Heaven".
  • The entry for The Old Monkey suggests that the Destined One is apparently one of numerous "Destined Ones" that have been sent out by the Old Monkey in search of the relics, many of whom end up failing but return to Mount Huaguo to tell stories of their adventures.
    • This is further supported by various characters commenting on the difference of "this one" and how they might succeed in their journey. For example, upon the Destined One first meeting Zhu Bajie, the latter will comment on him having that "same look again", before noting that he is "another mute" when he doesn't get a reply, implying that Bajie has met previous Destined Ones.
